Kiwanis Meets Each Tuesday; plan special projects, Easter Egg Hunt

The Vinton area Kiwanis Club meets each Tuesday at noon at The Pizza Ranch.   This week's program was presented by Bob Mahood and Dave Henkel, who spoke about their locally created fishing rods. Also included were rod pieces created by local wood worker, Tom Garwood. Vinton is fortunate to have such a talented group of craftsmen!   Kiwanis is made up of local business people as well as people who are interested in the community.

Planting and Managing Native Grasses and Flowers MEETING TONIGHT

  Spring is on the way, if you want to learn about planting and managing native grasses and flowers, the Benton County IRVM (Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management) Committee will be hosting a meeting at 7:00 P.M., March 18, 2010 at the Farmer Savings Bank and Trust, 401 B Ave,(use west door).  The Iowa Coordinator of County IRVM programs, Kirk Henderson will be the featured speaker.

The Old Creamery Nature Trail

The Old Creamery Nature Trail is just over 14 miles in length and runs  from Vinton through Garrison to Dysart.  The trail is open for the use  of walkers, runners, bicyclists,  bird watchers and nature  enthusiasts.  The trail base is primarily composed of limestone and we  do our best to keep it mowed and sprayed during the warm weather  months.

Knights of Columbus donate to ARC, Special Olympics

Knights of Columbus donates to ARC, Special Olympics The Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive, for People with Disabilities was held in August, raised more than $1,000 for area organizations. The Brandon United Methodist Church will be hosting a community supper at no charge on saturday March 20, 6:00 p.m. mean and 7:00 p.m.  music provided by The Jewels. Help Us Change The Statistics

On March 29th, 6:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at the Vinton City Hall located at 310 A Ave. in Vinton. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss tips and advice on talking with your children before they start drinking. Freedom Quilts 'Made With Love To Comfort You'

      Betty Nielsen of Fonda, Iowa began this project as a response to the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Betty’s project has provided thousands of Freedom Quilts to be given to the 9-11 victims’ families and to soldiers’ families. Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students present 'It's about time'

Andrew Freeman sings   The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students will present the annual spring play production on Thursday and Friday, March 18 & 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tilford elementary auditorium.    This year’s theme, “It’s About Time” will showcase more than thirty talented young students and six guest performers.

VS Jazz Band learns time of State Championship performance

  The Vinton-Shellsburg High School Jazz Band knew they were heading to compete for a Jazz Band Championship before this past weekend, they just didn’t know what time they would perform in Des Moines on April 13, 2010. The high school jazz band and Director Karl Smith topped off an outstanding competition season on Saturday with a resounding 1st place finish at the Charles City Festival.
